Vision for rural India

Rama Devi’s day as a VisionSpring Vision Entrepreneur starts early in the day during which she goes to villages and conducts Vision Camps. Rama Devi has been a Vision Entrepreneur since November 2006. A Vision Entrepreneur is an eye-care service provider who goes from one village to another with his/her Business in a Bag conducting vision camps. The Business in a Bag contains eye-screening charts which are necessary to conduct eye-screenings, eye-glasses (reading glasses as well as UV glasses), credibility documents, etc.

Usually Vision Entrepreneurs are rural persons (men or women) who are trained by VisionSpring to identify certain specific eye-problems like Presbyopia and provide an appropriate solution in the form of a reading glass. Whereas those suffering from Presbyopia are provided with reading glass, those with other eye-problems are referred to VisionSpring’s partner eye hospitals. Vision-Entrepreneurs conduct vision-camps in villages which have very poor access to eye –care facilities.

VisionSpring as an organization, thus, provides access to eye-care to those who do not have adequate eye-care facilities, and also empowers un-employed men and women to become successful entrepreneurs. Before joining VisionSpring, Rama Devi worked as a tailor, sewing garments from her home. Her husband, who worked as a farmer, endured long gaps of unemployment during the lean seasons. Despite Rama Devi's outgoing personality and charm, she sold only about $44 worth of her handiwork a month, which was insufficient to support her husband and two children.
Today, as a Vision Entrepreneur, Rama Devi consistently earns over $100 per month. Her husband, who was at first reluctant to support her work, decided to join the program as well once he saw how successful she had become. They recently made their first major investment - a motorcycle - which they use to reach more villages to host campaigns.  A natural saleswoman, Rama Devi is also an excellent mentor to the Vision Entrepreneurs she supervises. She explains to new Vision Entrepreneurs that "they must be outgoing and not be afraid to speak to new people about their work."
The training given to Rama Devi to be a Vision Entrepreneur as well as her experience working as one, has increased her capabilities and skills significantly, thereby helping her become a successful entrepreneur. It is also interesting to note that being a Vision Entrepreneur, has not only enhanced Rama Devi’s economic status, but her social standing in her village as well. People in her village now see her as a health provider serving the community and also as a successful businesswoman. Recently Rama Devi has referred her sister Sangeetha too to the VisionSpring programme. Sangeetha has formed a team with another Vision Entrepreneur and the two of them together ean around $200 per month.
